See a Gorgeous Trailer for Terrence Malick's Nature Documentary 'Voyage of Time'

He brought us The Tree of Life and Badlands; now, he’s bringing us the entire natural world. A new trailer for Terrence Malick’s ambitious documentary Voyage of Time: Life’s Journey has landed, and it’s full of the beautiful, dreamlike images that have defined Malick’s career. Watch it above, exclusively from Empire magazine.

In the trailer, galaxies explode into life, volcanoes erupt, and jellyfish bloom across the sea, all to the soothing narration of Cate Blanchett. (Blanchett narrates the 90-minute theatrical version of the film, while the accompanying 45-minute IMAX version will be narrated by Brad Pitt.) Malick’s first-ever documentary has been decades in the making; he first conceived of making a film about the origin of the universe in the late 1970s, and picked up the project — described by French distributor Wild Bunch as “a celebration of the earth — from the birth of the universe to its final collapse” — around the same time he was making 2011’s Oscar-nominated Tree of Life. The special-effects-laden documentary has been in production so long, in fact, that its original investors sued for their money back in 2013. Finally, a version of the film is ready for its close-up: Voyage of Time: The IMAX Experience opens on Oct. 7. There’s no release date yet for the longer version Voyage of Time: Life’s Journey.
