A brand-new film about Katherine Parr (also sometimes spelled Catherine Parr), the sixth and last wife of King Henry VIII, is coming to theaters this summer. Described as a "psychological thriller," Firebrand is director Karim Ainouz's first English-language film.

The official synopsis is as follows: "In blood-soaked Tudor England, Katherine Parr, the sixth and last wife of King Henry VIII, is named Regent while tyrant Henry is fighting overseas. Katherine has done everything she can to push for a new future based on her radical Protestant beliefs. When an increasingly ailing and paranoid King returns, he turns his fury on the radicals, charging Katherine’s childhood friend with treason and burns her at the stake. Horrified and grieving, but forced to deny it, Katherine finds herself fighting for her own survival. Conspiracy reverberates through the palace. Everyone holds their breath – for the queen to slip up, for Henry to take her head like wives before. With the hope for a future free of tyranny at risk, will Katherine submit to the inevitable for the sake of King and country?" At Cannes 2023, the movie received an eight-minute standing ovation.

Here's everything you need to know about Firebrand.

It's based on the book Queen's Gambit by Elizabeth Fremantle.

Queen's Gambit: A Novel

Per the publisher, Fremantle's novel "Katherine has to employ all her instincts to navigate the treachery of the court, drawing a tight circle of women around her, including her stepdaughter, Meg, traumatized by events from their past that are shrouded in secrecy, and their loyal servant Dot, who knows and sees more than she understands. With the Catholic faction on the rise once more, reformers being burned for heresy, and those close to the king vying for position, Katherine's survival seems unlikely. Yet as she treads the razor's edge of court intrigue, she never quite gives up on love."

The movie's title was changed from Queen's Gambit to Firebrand so as not to confuse viewers with the Netflix chess drama.

The film stars as Alicia Vikander and Jude Law.

Vikander will play Katherine Parr, and Law will take on the role of King Henry VIII. The rest of the cast is as follows:

  • Junia Rees as Princess Elizabeth (daughter of Anne Boleyn)

  • Patsy Ferran as Princess Mary (daughter of Catherine of Aragon)

  • Erin Doherty as Anne Askew, poet and radical preacher

  • Sam Riley as Thomas Seymour (brother of Jane Seymour)

  • Eddie Marsan as Edward Seymour (brother of Jane Seymour)

  • Simon Russell as Stephen Gardiner, the Bishop of Winchester

  • Ruby Bentall as Cat, a lady of the bedchamber

  • Bryony Hannah as Ellen, a lady of the bedchamber

  • Maia Jemmett as Dot, a lady of the bedchamber

The creative team includes Killing Eve writers Henrietta and Jessica Ashworth, who wrote the screenplay; hair and makeup designer Jenny Shircore; costume designer Michael O’Connor; production designer Helen Scott; cinematographer Helene Louvart; and casting director Nina Gold.

The story is a feminist retelling of Parr.

"What I found pretty incredible is to have this character that I portrayed; she has books you can go and read…not only do I listen to her own voice, knowing it’s a woman from 500 years ago, I don’t think human emotions and behaviors have changed over five hundred years," Vikander said. Katherine is "a woman who is married off, without having any say in it. Five wives that are dead. Putting yourself in that state of mind, really changes things. You realize how fragile each moment is."

Jude Law, who takes on the role of Henry VIII, says he "started with him as a man … the physical frailties he was carrying and how he dealt with those…he became, not a recognizable, but an empathetic person."

Firebrand will premiere in theaters June 14, 2024.
