See Christian Bale as Frankenstein and Jessie Buckley as The Bride in First Look at Maggie Gyllenhaal's New Film

The actress and filmmaker gave fans a sneak peek of her sophomore directorial feature on Instagram

The classic story of Frankenstein is getting a new twist from Maggie Gyllenhaal.

On April 4, the actress and filmmaker, 46, posted a sneak-peek to Instagram with images from her upcoming sophomore directorial effort The Bride — featuring lead actors Christian Bale and Jessie Buckley in costume.

"Meet The Bride & Frank 🖤," Gyllenhaal captioned the photos with "#CameraTest."

In one photo, Bale, 50, is seen decked out in tattered clothing, stitches and scarring on his head and chest, as well as a large tattoo across his body. Another image shows Buckley, 34, as Frankenstein's bride, with curly blonde hair and apparent scarring (or blood) on her mouth.

As Variety noted, the film will also feature Penélope Cruz, Peter Sarsgaard and Annette Bening and will be set in 1930s Chicago. It follows Buckley's titular character who is revived, "lusts for romance and ignites a radical social movement," the outlet shared. It is set to hit theaters in October 2025 via Warner Bros.

“It is beyond my wildest dreams getting to go back and work with [Gyllenhaal] again," Buckley, who previously earned an Oscar nod for her role in Gyllenhaal's directorial debut The Lost Daughter, told IndieWire.

"We really fell in love working on The Lost Daughter. I feel so grateful that I get to be part of a coin of extraordinary women who have so much to say, such brilliant minds, and such imagination.”

Sarsgaard previously told The Independent that the film is a “big, romantic, deeply romantic, wild, punk monster movie," which is "going to be energizing."

"It’s rambunctious," he added. "People are going to be very surprised that this is Maggie’s second movie. It is nothing, at all, like The Lost Daughter.”

In similar news, earlier this year, actor Jacob Elordi was cast as Frankenstein in Netflix's own adaptation of author Mary Shelley’s 1818 novel. In that film, Oscar Isaac will play Victor Frankenstein, with Guillermo del Toro directing.

As Deadline shared at the time, Elordi was replacing Andrew Garfield in the film, as the actor left due to “strike postponements that led to scheduling conflicts.”
