'Freud's Last Session,' which depicts an imagined meeting between Sigmund Freud and 'Chronicles of Narnia' author C.S. Lewis, opens in select theaters Dec. 22

Anthony Hopkins and Matthew Goode portray important 20th century figures in their latest movie.

Sony Pictures Classics has released the first trailer for 85-year-old Hopkins' latest movie Freud's Last Session, which stars the two-time Academy Award winner as the famed 20th century neurologist Sigmund Freud.

Opposite Hopkins in the movie is Matthew Goode (The Imitation Game), who portrays Chronicles of Narnia author C.S. Lewis in a film that imagines the two men meeting just before World War II breaks out in Europe to discuss their personal beliefs about the existence of God.

Freud's Last Session is a work of fiction inspired by the 2002 nonfiction book The Question of God: C.S. Lewis and Sigmund Freud Debate God, Love, Sex, and the Meaning of Life by author Armand Nicholi, a PBS miniseries adapted from the book and a 2010 play that shares a title with the movie by writer Mark St. Germain.

Freud, who lived the final years of his life in the United Kingdom after fleeing Nazi Germany's reign in Austria, is not known to have ever met Lewis, who worked at Magdalen College at Oxford University during the time period depicted in the film.

Germain returned to write the movie's screenplay as an adaptation of his play. The film is directed by Matt Brown, whose previous work as a director includes 2015's The Man Who Knew Infinity.

The film is Hopkins' second of 2023. He also stars in the upcoming biopic One Life, another drama set partially during the lead-up to World War II, in which the acclaimed actor portrays an English man credited with bringing hundreds of children from from then-Nazi occupied Czechoslovakia to England in the months before the war began.

Freud's Last Session releases in theaters in New York City and Los Angeles Dec. 22 with a larger theatrical release to follow.
