Breslin is joined in the cast by Ryan Phillippe, Luke Wilson, Emily VanCamp, Donald Sutherland and more in the upcoming film based on true events

Abigail Breslin leads a star-studded cast in the upcoming crime thriller Miranda's Victim.

PEOPLE has the exclusive trailer for the Michelle Danner-directed film, based on the true story of Patricia "Trish" Weir (played by Breslin, 27), an 18-year-old woman who was kidnapped and sexually assaulted in 1963.

"Her assailant, Ernesto Miranda (Sebastian Quinn), confesses without legal representation and serves a two-year sentence, only to have the verdict later overturned," an official synopsis reads.

It continues, "In the resulting retrial, a determined prosecutor (Luke Wilson) seeks to hold Ernesto accountable for his crimes, despite grueling opposition from Ernesto's defense attorney (Ryan Phillippe)."

"What follows is a legal proceeding that forever changes the nation's justice system," the synopsis concludes.

Also starring are Emily VanCamp, Mireille Enos, Enrique Murciano, Josh Bowman, Brent Sexton, Taryn Manning, Nolan Gould, Dan Lauria, Michael Mulheren, Kyle MacLachlan, Andy Garcia and Donald Sutherland.

"It's just so hard to have to keep reliving this over and over," Breslin, as Weir, says through tears near the end of the trailer.

Judge Laurance T. Wren (Sutherland, 88) tells the defendant, "Mr. Miranda, our justice system has afforded you every privilege, every protection."

"This is a courtesy not extended to your victim," he adds.

Miranda's Victim is written by J. Craig Stiles, who co-wrote the story alongside George Kolber and Richard Lasser. It premiered in February at the 2023 Santa Barbara International Film Festival.

Deadline announced the film — whose plot serves as a preamble to the establishment of the Miranda rights — was in production under Vertical last month, with Danner telling the outlet in a statement that Miranda's Victim "is a story about courage and justice."

"Within the court of law, it was a case of personal justice, but what makes it fascinating is that it ends up becoming iconic justice," the director added.

Miranda's Victim is in theaters and on demand Oct. 6.
