Second annual Chicano Music Festival kicks off Cinco de Mayo

SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — The second annual Chicano Music Festival kicked off a special Cinco de Mayo party Sunday with music, art and a celebration of Chicano culture.

“Chicano culture is really just about being proud to be Mexican, but being proud to be American,” said festival organizer, Yesi Ortiz. “It’s the biggest music festival to come to Logan Heights.”

The event also featured a kids play area, Aztec dancers and vendors.

Ortiz says they specifically reached out to local retailers for this event, like authors Claudia Maldonado and Cecilia Caballero.

“It’s a way for Chicanitos to see themselves in books, because they are all in Spanish,” said Caballero. “It is important to see themselves, because growing up, personally I didn’t see books that had me in it.”

The festival was all about celebrating the culture, but also about giving back. Ortiz says a portion of the proceeds will go to Sherman Heights Community Center.

“It’s by that love that’s rooted in our culture that we want to be able to pay it forward and break stereotypes and break barriers. So it’s important that we show the way for our future,” she said.

Festivities continue until 8 p.m. Sunday. Event organizers say the plan is to bring the festival back next year.
