Season for Sharing's legacy of giving continues this year, thanks to donors

Today, we announce that the Arizona Republic's Season for Sharing campaign raised an astounding $1.8 million this year.

And we remind readers that 100% of that money is going back to the community through 164 charities that help struggling children and families, the housing- and food-challenged, older adults striving to live independently, low-income students aspiring to go to college, teachers who need supplies... and so many people dealing with fallout from COVID-19.

Who do I mean by "we?" I mean you: the thousands of generous people who gave $20, $200, $2,000 — or any amount — to Season for Sharing during the November-January fundraising period.

Season for Sharing: Helping older adults, struggling families, education

Because of you, the few domestic violence shelters scattered around vast swaths of Arizona are available as a refuge to those who need it.

Because of you, education- and arts-related charities can continue plugging learning gaps caused by almost two years of at-home classes.

Because of you, foster kids newly placed in homes or aging out of the system will be able to get the support — or the toothbrush — they need.

Because of you, refugees from Afghanistan, Somalia and around the world will find it easier to gain traction on their new life.

The Nina Mason Pulliam Charitable Trust — the legacy of the same Pulliam family that created Season for Sharing in 1993 when they owned the paper — graciously provided matching funds again this year. The Trust does such good work supporting environmental, animal and other causes. We thank them for the ongoing support.

The Pulliams believed that the newspaper plays a key role in the community, not only reporting on issues, but being part of the solutions. That spirit lives in Season for Sharing.

Since 1993, almost $72 million has been raised for charities that help our neighbors in need. The work they do lifts us all up.

To our donors: Thank you. We've done this together. We should be proud.
