Season 6 Premiere of ‘Downton Abbey’ Full of Drama and Love

The sixth and final season of Downton Abbey premiered Sunday night, and it was fraught with British drama and some good old-fashioned romance. Now that it’s 1925, England’s economy is not what it once was. And while the house is facing the unfortunate business of downsizing its staff, outside ne’er-do-wells are looking to make a few quid any way that can — including through blackmail. One such person, Mrs. Bevan, a chambermaid, threatened to expose Lady Mary’s tryst with Lord Gillingham. In the end, however, she was paid merely 50 pounds and told to mind herself.

The most endearing plot line concerned Mrs. Hughes and her insecurities about having an aging body and a physical relationship with her fiancé, Mr. Carson. Mrs. Hughes asks Mrs. Patmore to speak with Mr. Carson in order to find out what exactly he is hoping to get out of the upcoming marriage. Mr. Carson tells Mrs. Patmore to relay the message, “I think she is beautiful.” He goes on to say, “I love her … I am happy, and I am tickled, and I am bursting with pride that she would agree to be my wife.”

Dowton Abbey airs Sundays at 9pm on PBS.
