Sean Young, best known for her roles in โ€œBlade Runnerโ€ and โ€œAce Ventura: Pet Detective,โ€ has been acting in Hollywood for over 40 years โ€” and has seen a lot. Once branded as difficult to work with and blacklisted in Hollywood, Young revealed how her career was sabotaged by a handful of โ€œpowerful, terribly vindictive men.โ€

In an interview with the Daily Beastโ€™s Marlow Stern, the actor said she doesnโ€™t think of herself as strong-willed, but she โ€œdid make men nervous โ€” and for no particular reasonโ€ back in the โ€™80s. During the interview, Stern mentioned the David Letterman interview where Young flaunted her armpit hair, to which she said Letterman was โ€œintimidatedโ€ in the moment.

โ€œDavidโ€™s much more insecure than he lets on,โ€ Young said. โ€œHeโ€™s a great guy, though. In my opinion, itโ€™s much more common for show business to attract very insecure people. People who need approval. Itโ€™s not really known for attracting honest, down-to-earth, salt-of-the-earth folks, unless theyโ€™re on the crew.โ€

Young said she always felt that she was down-to-earth and straightforward with other people, but later realized that she may have been perceived as โ€œoffensive.โ€

โ€œThat was not my intention,โ€ Young said. โ€œI only got offensive later because I started getting pissed off, like, โ€˜This is serious. This is my career. You donโ€™t just blacklist me.โ€™ Itโ€™s terrible.โ€

After co-starring with Young in โ€œThe Boostโ€ in 1988, James Woods filed a harassment lawsuit against her, which she eventually ended up winning. When asked why Woods was so vindictive, she said she learned that a rational person will never be able to understand an irrational person.

โ€œI couldnโ€™t wrap my head around it,โ€ Young said. โ€œIt was so nutty and stupid, and a waste not only of my time but not good for himself. Why take all the attention off this movie and put it on this?โ€

The Daily Beast brought up a 2009 interview between Young and Carl Reiner, where Reiner said Youngโ€™s reputation had been unfairly smeared by a famous director. Asked if that director was Warren Beatty, Young said, โ€œWarren was definitely one of them. Steven Spielberg was another.โ€

When asked if Beatty was โ€œthe worst of the bunch,โ€ Young replied, โ€œNoโ€ฆ I think the sleazy or difficult part is that he probably thought he was treating me really well. You know what Iโ€™m saying? Itโ€™s not just Warren โ€” itโ€™s across the board. Ever since the movie business began, women have been treated as a commodity. There was always someone grabbing you, and I just ignored it. I mean, have you taken a look at Harvey Weinstein? How the fuck is he gonna get laid unless he has power? Never.โ€

Back in 2017, Young revealed that Weinstein exposed himself to her while working on the 1992 film โ€œLove Crimes,โ€ which was produced by Weinsteinโ€™s former company, Miramax. She told him, โ€œI really wouldnโ€™t be pulling that thing out because itโ€™s really not pretty. Put that little thing away.โ€ This is when she said she got a bad reputation for saying no.

โ€œAnd you have to remember, someone that gross, think of who they really are inside,โ€ Young said. โ€œI think his game plan was: โ€˜Be as powerful as possible so I can get laid.โ€™ Thatโ€™s as simple as most of these plans are for people. It doesnโ€™t get a lot deeper than that.โ€

When asked about the โ€œincredibly aggressive and uncomfortableโ€ love scene in โ€œBlade Runnerโ€ that Young filmed with Harrison Ford, she said director Ridley Scott really wanted to date her, but she never reciprocated.

โ€œHe started dating the actress who played Zhora, Joanna Cassidy, and I felt relieved,โ€ Young said. โ€œAnd then we do this scene, and I think it was Ridley. I think Ridley was like, โ€˜fuck you.โ€™ I was thinking, โ€˜Why did this have to be like that? What was the point of that?โ€™ and I think it was Ridleyโ€™s none-too-subtle message that he was getting even with me.โ€

Young said Scott never hired her again, and when it came to โ€œBlade Runner 2049,โ€ the actress was handed a 30-second hologram cameo.

โ€œWasnโ€™t that so full of shit?โ€ Young said. โ€œAnd there was nothing I could do about it. It was very clear that they knew that the audience would be upset that I wasnโ€™t in it, but they didnโ€™t want me to bitch about that publicly. So, they paid me some money, made me sign a non-disclosure agreement and gave me 30 seconds. And I was like, fine. They did give my son Quinn a job on โ€˜[Blade Runner] 2049โ€™ in visual arts, and I said all was forgiven. Heโ€™s got great skills.โ€

Young discussed the time Charlie Sheen wrote the word โ€œcuntโ€ on a piece of tape and stuck it on her back while filming โ€œWall Streetโ€ in 1987. She said Sheen did a lot of cocaine on set and was โ€œawful.โ€ Additionally, she called Oliver Stone โ€œa bastardโ€ for reducing her role after she stuck up for Daryl Hannah, who was forced to wear a dress she didnโ€™t feel comfortable in.

โ€œI look at Oliver and say, โ€˜Oliver, why would you want her to wear a dress she doesnโ€™t feel comfortable in?โ€™โ€ Young said. โ€œHe says, โ€˜Could you excuse us for a minute?โ€™ and I get up and leave the trailer. So, weโ€™re doing the rehearsal and he takes my only line in the scene โ€” Budโ€™s talking about racehorses and I turn to him and say, โ€˜These are jumping horses, dear, these arenโ€™t racehorses,โ€™ like a big snob โ€”and he gives my line to Daryl.โ€

After nearly landing the role of Marion Ravenwood in โ€œRaiders of the Lost Ark,โ€ Young said she offended Steven Spielberg after asking him at a New Yearโ€™s Eve party why she didnโ€™t get the part.

โ€œHe was all, โ€˜I did not mislead you! I did not!'โ€ Young said. โ€œI was like, โ€˜Whoa, calm down. I didnโ€™t mean it like you were a bad guy or anything, I just really thought I was going to get the part. You flew me back to California twice.โ€™ Very sensitive.โ€

Out of all the men mentioned, Young praised her โ€œAce Ventura: Pet Detectiveโ€ co-star Jim Carrey. She said he fought for her to get the part, even though Morgan Creek Productions wanted someone else.

โ€œHeโ€™s the only leading man who ever did that for me,โ€ Young said. โ€œJim came in and said, โ€œNo, no, no. Whatever youโ€™re hearing is bullshit. Sheโ€™s great.'โ€
