Sean Spicer reveals why he resigned and if Trump was his best boss ever

On Tuesday’s Jimmy Kimmel Live, former White House press secretary Sean Spicer stopped by to promote his new book, The Briefing: Politics, The Press, And The President.

During the interview, Kimmel grilled Spicer on a number of topics, including how Spicer’s mom has handled things, choosing truth over loyalty, and his resignation in July 2017.

Rumors swirled then that he was butting heads with Donald Trump over the hiring of Anthony Scaramucci. In fact, Spicer had written his resignation letter in May. As for Scaramucci, while Spicer admitted that working under him would not have been an acceptable situation, that’s not the reason he quit.

I had become the story too often, and that’s not a good place for a spokesperson to be,” Spicer said. “You’re not supposed to be talking or defending yourself. You’re supposed to be communicating on behalf of the person or the institution that you represent.”

Spicer said he wrote his resignation letter when he did because he knew things weren’t going to get any better.

“I wanted to make sure that I was ready,” he said. “Because at some point I knew that the end was coming, and it was coming sooner rather than later.”

Even though Spicer is out of the White House, he’s not out of Trump’s Rolodex. He said the president calls him “as much as he likes” and that the only time it was a little tense was the first post-resignation call. And it just happened to have come after Spicer did Kimmel’s show last September.

When Kimmel asked if Trump was mad about the appearance, Spicer said no.

“He said, ‘Great job on Jimmy Kimmel.’ I went, ‘Whew.’”
