MTV has announced that Sean “Diddy” Combs will receive the honorary Global Icon Award. As described in the announcement, “the Global Icon Award, originally from MTV’s Europe Music Awards (EMAs), celebrates an artist or band whose unparalleled career and continued influence have achieved a unique level of global success in music and beyond.” He will accept the award and perform live during the 2023 MTV Video Music Awards set to air Tuesday night, September 12, at 8:00pm from New Jersey’s Prudential Center. This will be his first performance at the event since 2005.

Diddy’s career stretches back more than a quarter century. The first of his two past VMA victories came in 1997 when he claimed Best R&B Video for “I’ll Be Missing You” featuring Faith Evans and 112. That song and video were made as a tribute to The Notorious B.I.G., who was murdered earlier that year and actually won a posthumous VMA that same night. Then in 1998 Diddy claimed the Viewer’s Choice Award for “It’s All About the Benjamins.”

In addition to the Global Icon Award, Diddy is nominated for four competitive prizes at this year’s VMAs: Best Collaboration and Best Hip-Hop for “Gotta Move On” featuring Bryson Tiller, Ashanti and Yung Miami; and Best Collaboration and Best R&B for “Creepin'” with Metro Boomin, The Weeknd and 21 Savage. The hip-hop pioneer will also be promoting his new R&B album, “The Love Album: Off the Grid,” which is set for release on September 15.

When the Global Icon Award was presented at the EMAs it went to a wide range of artists including Queen, Whitney Houston, Eminem, Duran Duran and Janet Jackson. Global Icon was first presented at the VMAs in 2021 when the award went to the rock band Foo Fighters. Then another veteran rock group, Red Hot Chili Peppers, received the honor in 2022. Diddy won’t be the only artist getting a career achievement prize this year, though. Shakira was previously announced as the recipient of the Video Vanguard Award.
