Writer Spike Feresten joins Kyle Meredith to talk about teaming up with Jerry Seinfeld for Unfrosted, the new Netflix comedy about the earth-shattering invention of the Pop-Tart. Listen to the new episode above, or wherever you get your podcasts.

Feresten — famous for writing Seinfeld episodes like “The Soup Nazi” and “The Muffin Tops,” as well as his work on Space Ghost Coast to Coast — explains how he reunited with Seinfeld for the absurd idea of Unfrosted. He discusses how even though the characters are based on real people, they adapted them to fit a Seinfeld-mold. “I harken back to writing a Seinfeld episode. To me it was the same,” he says. “These were all the same problems we were solving back then that we’re solving now.”

To that end, Feresten continues, they crafted Seinfeld’s character of Kellogg’s employee Bob Cabana to be more Seinfeldian: “I had legitimate concern about Jerry playing another person other than Jerry Seinfeld. He’d never done it. I know as a fan of watching television and movies that I always was thrown off when I saw my favorite comedian acting and not being as funny… [So,] we let the audience know very early on with jokes that you would do as Jerry Seinfeld from the stage or on the show. So, ‘Xanthan gum!’ is ‘Newman!’ We were leaving breadcrumbs right from the very beginning.”
