Scott Rudin, Barry Diller Set Closing Date For Tony Winner ‘The Humans’
Stephen Karam’s one-act drama The Humans will conclude the New York leg of its remarkable journey on January 15, a week shy of its one-year anniversary on Broadway. Producers Scott Rudin and Barry Diller said Thursday that a national tour of the play, about a Thanksgiving dinner in New York’s Chinatown that encompasses grief and reckoning in a post-9/11 word, will begin a national tour in November 2017 at Seattle Repertory Theatre, before moving on to engagements in top markets across the United States. Casting of the tour, which will be staged and designed by the Broadway creative team led by director Joe Mantello, will be announced at a later date
Originally presented off-Broadway by the Roundabout Theatre Company at the Laura Pels Theatre, Rudin and Diller moved it to the Second Stage Theatre’s Broadway venue, the Helen Hayes, where it began performances last January 24 and opened on February 18. On August 9 the show moved again, to the larger Gerald Schoenfeld Theatre, a Shubert Organization venue, where it will close after 502 performances.
The Humans won the 2016 Tony Award for Best Play, as well as Tonys for featured actors Jane Houdyshell and Reed Birney and set designer David Zinn. A finalist for the Pulitzer Prize, The Humans also was named best play by the New York Drama Critics Circle and earned Obie Awards for Karam and Houdyshell.
The Broadway cast includes Sarah Steele, Cassie Beck, Lauren Klein and Arian Moayed. In addition to Rudin and Diller, the full producing team included Roundabout Theatre Company, Fox Theatricals, James L. Nederlander, Terry Allen Kramer, Roy Furman, Daryl Roth, Jon B. Platt, Eli Bush, Broadway Across America, Jack Lane, Barbara Whitman, Jay Alix & Una Jackman, Scott M. Delman, Sonia Friedman, Amanda Lipitz, Peter May, Stephanie P. McClelland, Lauren Stein, and The Shubert Organization. Joey Parnes, Sue Wagner, and John Johnson are Executive Producers.
Come From Away, a new musical, is slated to begin preview performances February 18 at the Schoenfeld.
