Dixon started on the pole for the second year in the row and the fifth time in his career. The Chip Ganassi driver traded the lead with teammate Alex Palou in order to conserve fuel. However, Palou fell behind after entering the pits just as a yellow flag came out. Palou had to enter pit lane because he was running out of fuel.

A similar situation happened to Dixon last year after the veteran ran out of fuel approaching the pit stop an finished 17th after having the lead.
