Schools announce Jan. 7 closures amid Thursday snowfall, predicted winter storm

Snow, ice and sleet covered the West Tennessee region Thursday and continued to fall into the afternoon hours. School districts were out Thursday in anticipation for the predicted inclement weather, which caused a winter storm warning being issued in most parts of the region Wednesday night.

As a result, school districts have started announcing school closures for Friday.

As of 7:15 p.m. Thursday, the following schools have announced closures:

  • Alamo City School

  • Augustine School

  • Bells Elementary School

  • Benton County Schools

  • Bradford Special School District

  • Carroll County Schools

  • Crockett County School District

  • Decatur County Schools

  • Dyer County Schools

  • Dyersburg City Schools

  • Fayette County Public Schools and district offices

  • Gibson County Special School District

  • Hardeman County Schools

  • Hardin County

  • Haywood County Schools

  • Henderson County Schools

  • Henry County School System

  • Humboldt City Schools

  • Huntingdon Special School District

  • Jackson State Community College

  • Lake County Schools

  • Lauderdale County Schools

  • Lexington City School System and central office

  • Milan Special School District

  • Obion County School System

  • Paris Special School District

  • St. Mary's School

  • Tipton County Schools

  • Trenton Special School District

  • Trinity Christian Academy

  • Union City Schools

  • Weakley County Schools

  • West Carroll Special School District

McNairy County Schools and Jackson-Madison County School System announced both Thursday and Friday closures on Wednesday with JMCSS citing the weather and increased COVID-19 isolations and quarantines.

The NWS predicted three to five inches of snow with the possibility of more than six in areas that are under the winter storm warning. The snow and ice could lead to hazardous road conditions and power outages, the NWS said.
