Here in the Coachella Valley we love our pets. Our cats and dogs. Our rabbits and birds. Even our desert turtles! But unfortunately, there are still many animals living in shelters looking for their forever homes and loving families.

Luckily, many local nonprofits advocate for these homeless fur babies and exist solely to find homes for these precious pets.

Friends of the Palm Springs Animal Shelter operates the city’s animal shelter. It is an open admissions municipal shelter serving the City of Palm Springs and providing programs for animals, pets and pet owners across the Coachella Valley.

“We believe every animal deserves a loving, safe, healthy environment in which they can thrive,” Executive Director Dan Rossi says. “We envision a world where all animals are treated with kindness, compassion and respect.”

The organization’s mission is to transform lives through extraordinary animal care and advocacy.

“We want to inspire compassion and positive relationships between the community and animals through direct action and humane education,” Rossi says.

And they do exactly that. The shelter has and continues to find loving homes for hundreds of pets every year. There is always a special need to find homes for larger dogs, so if you — or someone you know — is looking for a big-hearted big pup — please visit the shelter’s website or campus.

The nonprofit also provides low-cost vaccines, dog licensing and many other services.

It’s for this incredibly kind and compassionate mission for our beloved animal friends that we award this week’s Schnitzer Foundation $1,000 Power of Community grant.

Thank you for all you do for these precious animals. We — and they — appreciate you!
