Scavengers Reign” has been canceled at Max, but all hope is not yet lost for the show.

Beginning on May 31, Season 1 of the animated sci-fi drama will begin streaming on Netflix in the U.S., the U.K., Ireland and New Zealand. The Netflix deal is non-exclusive, meaning the episodes will remain available on Max. Sources tell Variety that Netflix is considering picking up “Scavengers Reign” for a second season, but a decision won’t be made until after Season 1’s debut on the streamer.

The series is set on an alien planet where a damaged interstellar freighter ship gets stranded and follows the remaining crew as they struggle to locate their ship and missing crewmates while navigating a hostile world that has thrived without human interference.

Variety named “Scavengers Reign” one of the top 19 shows of 2023, with critic Alison Herman writing that it “pairs the engrossing ambience of a nature documentary with the propulsive thrust of narrative. Its characters are fully realized and flawed, but their main scene partners are an environment they need to intuit the workings of alongside the audience. The 12-episode season is a deep cut worth seeking out (or renewing, if you’re the powers that be and Warner Bros. Discovery).”

“Scavengers Reign” was created Joseph Bennett and Charles Huettner, who executive produce alongside Chris Prynoski. Sean Buckelew and James Merrill serve as co-executive producers, with Benjy Brooke as supervising director. The series was produced by Green Street Pictures in partnership with Titmouse, Inc.

“We are beyond thrilled that ‘Scavengers Reign’ will be joining the incredible animation lineup on Netflix,” said Bennett, Buckelew, Merrill and Brooke on behalf of Green Street. “We’re immensely grateful to everyone who has watched the show already and to Netflix for giving it an opportunity to be discovered by a wider audience.”
