‘Scary Movie’ Reboot In The Works From Paramount Pictures

Scary Movie is making its return to the big screen. According to Variety, Paramount Pictures is partnering with producer Neal H. Moritz to reboot the comedic horror franchise. The new film is set to go into production later this fall and aims to hit theaters by spring 2025.

Additionally, the Scary Movie is being made as part of Paramount’s first-look partnership with Miramax. There is no confirmation that any of the original castmates will be involved in the modern-day revival, per The Hollywood Reporter.

In 2000, the first Scary Movie—directed by Keenan Ivory Wayans and co-written by his brothers Shawn Wayans and Marlon Wayans—was released in theaters, grossing $278 million globally per THR. The satirical film starred Anna Faris, Regina Hall, Shawn Wayans, and others and spoofing movies like Scream and I Know What You Did Last Summer.

The first sequel, Scary Movie 2, was released the following year. It brought back the main characters and jokingly referenced House On The Haunted Hill, The Exorcist, and more. The second installment was the final movie in the franchise to involve the Wayans family.

Scary Movie 3 was released in 2003 and targeted films like The Ring and Signs. The franchise continued with Scary Movie 4 and Scary Movie 5 in 2006 and 2013, respectively. The last movie is the only one in the entire series to not feature Hall and Faris as the duo Cindy and Brenda.

In February 2023, Faris discussed her experience working on the films and what it would take to bring her back to Scary Movie.

“Only for a whole lot of money!” she responded jokingly when asked by PureWow about bringing Cindy back.

“Do you know what it’s like to have something fly at you and not wince? It’s really hard…So that’s where the big money is.” But all jokes aside, Faris added, “I’m so grateful for [that] franchise and I grew up doing them.”
