In a scary bad box office, “The Nun II ”narrowly kicks the crap out of “Expend4bles”

It was fun while it lasted, wasn't it? "It" being the bonanza box office this summer. Well, the first weekend of fall isn't the only chill in the air as movie ticket sales are down down down.

The Nun II benefits from this lackluster season, topping the box office for a third week in a row by pulling in $8.4 million. This is also the second week the movie has just barely out-earned its nearest competitor, last week besting A Haunting in Venice by less than $250 thousand.

Domestically, the ninth film in the Conjuring franchise has grossed $69.2 million, while globally it's sitting at $204.2 million.

Expend4bles, or Expendables 4 to anyone allergic to confusingly bad titles, hit a franchise low with its 2nd place, $8.3 million debut, against a projected $15 million. Internationally, Sylvester Stallone and co. fared a bit better, debuting at No. 3 (behind The Nun II and A Haunting in Venice) with $12.3 million, for a global weekend haul of $20.6 million.

Coming nearly 10 years after the last Expendables movie, 2014's Expendables 3, the fourth installment adds some "new blood" with the addition of 50 Cent, Megan Fox, and Andy Garcia alongside franchise vets Stallone, Jason Statham, Dolph Lundgren, and Randy Couture.

Since launching in 2010, the Expendables franchise has made over $800 million worldwide, with 2012's Expendables 2 ranking as the most successful of the series. With this box office performance, however, Expen4bles will surely be bringing up the rear.

Speaking of which, A Haunting in Venice came in third this weekend with $6.3 million for a domestic cume of $25.4 million ($71.6 globally). The Equalizer 3 took fourth with $4.7 million, bringing its domestic total to $81.3 million ($148.7 million globally). And the year's top movie Barbie is still hanging onto the top 5, adding another $3.2 million to its $630.5 million domestic take. Globally, the Greta Gerwig blockbuster has made $1.4 billion.
