When it comes to testing out new products for her skincare line The Outset, Scarlett Johansson looks right inside her house. Turns out, her husband — that would be SNL star Colin Jost — is more than happy to help out.

“He’s like my guinea pig for all of this stuff,” Johansson told an intimate crowd of beauty editors and shoppers at a recent Nordstrom Beauty event in N.Y.C., where she and Outset co-founder Kate Foster officially launched their line at Nordstrom.

Johansson, 38, said she always wanted “one set of skincare products on our counter that Colin and I could both use” and added that they even bring the products on the road with them.

“We went to a wedding this weekend and we used the blue clay mask! I was like, ‘Honey, I brought the mask!’”

Johansson said that her favorite thing about the mineral-rich mask, which is made with blue clay to help unclog and minimize pores, is that it doesn't dry and crack on the skin.

As for the product she and Jost fight over the most, it’s the fan-loved Firming Vegan Collagen Prep Serum. “It’s the one thing Colin and I do battle about — I never thought my husband would be using a serum!”

Right now, Johansson is most hyped on the brand’s Restorative Niacinamide Night Cream, so much so that she even uses it during the day. “My skin is very dry and our night cream has such a creamy, dense finish,” she shared, adding, “The niacinamide is also so great for brightening.” At $54, the night cream is the most expensive product in the line, making it more accessible than a lot of the luxury skincare products on the market right now.

The Outset is built on the foundation of clean ingredients and a simpler, more minimalist daily routine that doesn't involve a multitude of steps to achieve a clear, glowy complexion. The focus for the brand was born from Johansson’s own experience with acne.

"I still look back at photos of me on the red carpet in my twenties, and I'm like, 'I remember that pimple,'" she told PEOPLE last year.

Her skin struggles became particularly stressful when she was shooting a movie. "It was terrible," she shared. "I would cover my acne before I even got in the makeup chair just so that I didn't feel so exposed. It really does affect how you feel about yourself and you just want to scrub it away."

Because of her breakouts, the star said she tried "every kind of acne peel and mask and resurfacing polish" but that ended up being too harsh on her skin. So she took a more pared-down approach keeping it easy with a three-step routine of cleansing, toning, and moisturizing. A clearer complexion followed.

That routine inspired The Outset, a "clean, effective and simple" collection of products. And Johansson is loving her new-ish role as a beauty entrepreneur.

“I always anticipate that there's going to be some level of skepticism because I've experienced it in my movie life too,” she told PEOPLE. “But I feel confident about our products — they're just so reliable. The transparency of what's in the line and what it's doing sets it apart. We call it the white tee shirt of skincare because it pairs well with other stuff.”
