'Saved By the Bell' Reboot With Mario Lopez, Elizabeth Berkley Is a Go

If hearing, “When I wake up in the morning and the alarm gives out a warning and I don’t think I’ll ever make it on time,” gives you flashbacks to the days of oversized flip-phones and swooning over Zack Morris, you’re in luck. A Saved By the Bell reboot starring Mario Lopez and Elizabeth Berkley is officially a go! Thanks to NBCUniversal’s new streaming service, Peacock, ’80s and ’90s kids will finally get the chance to revisit some of their favorite Bayside Tigers.

Here’s what we know so far. Per the Hollywood Reporter, Lopez and Berkley will both produce in addition to reprising their original roles as A.C. Slater and Jessie Spano. It stands to reason they’ll play adult versions of themselves, presumably parents of a new generation of students. Interestingly, NBC is still in talks with other members of the original cast about returning, including Mark-Paul Gosselaar.

If Gosselaar declines, the series may find itself with a new Zack Morris. Why? The comedy will reportedly center around what happens when Morris — now governor of California — catches flack for closing too many low-income high schools. To remedy the situation, he proposes that students from the closed schools be sent to the highest-performing schools in the state, including the affluent Bayside High. With the injection of new students, Bayside’s “over-privileged” kids get a comical dose of reality.

Funny and with a strong, salient social message? We can dig it.

Here’s hoping the rest of the original cast at least cameos, since we know they’re already prone to real-life reunions. At the very least, it would be nice to see if some of their recent comments about their characters ring true. When Tiffani Thiessen (aka Kelly Kapowski) spoke at the #BlogHer 18 Creators Summit last August, SheKnows asked if Bayside’s head cheerleader had been a feminist. Her response? “I think she may have been without knowing it,” Thiessen said, explaining that Kapowski “made her mark by the little she had, and there’s something so empowering about that too in a different way.”

SheKnows also had the chance to chat with Lopez this summer, and we couldn’t resist asking then what it would take to get the busy actor-producer-entrepreneur to sign on for a reboot. “I’ve got a lot on my plate,” he laughed, adding, “But if they come up with a clever way, then I’d be open to it. It can’t be in high school anymore, though. Too bad my kids aren’t older, because they’d be great.” Hmm, clearly NBC found a way to hook Lopez — and we can’t wait to see what it is.

And his prediction for what Slater might be like today gives us hope that maybe his real-life kids could make an appearance, perhaps as younger siblings. “I think [Slater] would be a good dad, you know?” Lopez said. “A lot of things that he was doing as a character was really me in real life … so, he’d probably be a lot like me.”

We’ll have to wait and see when Peacock rolls out in April 2020.
