Savannah Guthrie Has Vision Loss, Torn Retina After Serious Eye Injury

Savannah Guthrie is recovering after a scary accident while playing with her 2-year-old son, Charley.

The 47-year-old Today show co-anchor called in to the NBC morning show on Wednesday, and shared that her son Charley threw a toy train at her eye, which tore her retina.

"It has a really pointed edge and he threw it right at me," she said. "... It happened last week, actually, and then I lost my vision in my right eye about 24 hours later, and then it turned out to be kind of serious. They were afraid my retina was detached."

Guthrie said she has undergone a few laser procedures trying to avoid a full surgery.

"I really did lose my vision in my right eye,” she said. " ... It was so blurry from -- not to get too gross -- but there was so much blood inside the eye that it completely blocked my vision."

Still, Guthrie remained positive about her injury and said doctors were not trying to "weld back" her retina. She said she even hopes to still attend the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade on Thursday.

"It's now looking more hopeful," she said. " ... I'm not supposed to like jump up and down or anything, because it's kind of literally hanging by a thread, but I'm very positive 'cause I think it's going to be OK."

ET spoke to the mother of two in April at The Hollywood Reporter's Most Powerful People in Media event in New York City, where she explained how her 5-year-old daughter, Vale, has inspired her own body confidence.
