‘Saturday Night Live’ #TBT: Move Aside, Taylor Swift — Woody Harrelson Knows 1989

Woody Harrelson has proven he can do comedy and drama with effortless ease. He can go from brooding alcoholic Haymitch in The Hunger Games to a wisecracking hypnotist in this week’s new Now You See Me 2. And he hosted perhaps the best episode of Saturday Night Live in its 40th season.

This throwback clip is from his opening monologue, which sends up Taylor Swift’s album 1989. Because, you see, as Harrelson explains, “I know a little bit more about 1989 than she does, even if the memories are a little bit fuzzy… because of the drugs.”

With some help from his Hunger Games co-stars Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson, and Liam Hemsworth, Harrelson then sings his own version of “Blank Space.” The tune pokes fun at Harrelson’s drug use and famously laidback manner. The goofy lines include “Thought I met Margaret Thatcher, but it was Saddam Hussein, then I had a blank space baby, because I used to do cocaine!”

Aside from Now You See Me 2, Harrelson can next be seen in The Duel opposite Hemsworth on June 24.

Saturday Night Live returns for its 42nd season this fall.
