'Saturday Night Live' #TBT: Luck of the Irish

The Irish are coming to Saturday Night Live!

Count your lucky clovers, because Irish actress Saoirse Ronan (currently starring in the acclaimed Lady Bird) and Irish rock stars U2 headline SNL this weekend.

This is Ronan’s first time hosting, and U2’s fourth time as a musical guest, but SNL is no stranger to the luck of the Irish. Back in 2004, Liam Neeson hosted the late-night sketch show and poked some fun at the image of his country.

In this throwback sketch, Buildin’ Finn McQuinn (Seth Meyers) stops by an Irish couple’s home to surprise them with a home makeover. Mr. McArdle (Neeson) is dubious and decamps to the local pub to wait it out, while Mrs. McArdle (Amy Poehler) is excited to see what Finn and his crew can do to their one-room cottage.

A few rounds of beer, a friendly brawl, and a jig to a fiddler’s tune later, Mr. McArdle shows up to see all the “changes.” Like how Finn emptied out the ashtrays, so it doesn’t smell as if people have been inside smoking all day.

“It’s glorious!” McArdle says, almost tearing up. “It’s the nicest thing anyone’s ever done for me.”

Just wait until he sees what Finn has done with his mother’s mirror.

Saoirse Ronan hosts SNL with musical guests U2 this Saturday, at 11:30 p.m. on NBC.
