Alec Baldwin holds the record for hosting Saturday Night Live (a whopping 17 times), has made numerous cameos, and earned his first Emmy nomination for appearing on the show (he’s previously been nominated 17 times for other series). And many pundits believe he’s likely to win the trophy Sunday night.
From his very first hosting gig in 1990, Baldwin was a standout. His monologue was sparkling, but it was his performance in the “Brenda the Waitress” sketch that instantly put him in the SNL Hall of Fame.
The best thing about the sketch is that it’s so brilliantly simple. Baldwin plays a hunky cowboy who flirts with a diner waitress (Jan Hooks). There’s no goofy premise or jokey twist. There’s only fast-paced banter laden with sexual innuendoes — and neither Baldwin nor Hooks come close to breaking.
“I like my eggs on top of my toast,” the cowboy growls.
Hooks grins. “I just bet you do.”
And later, Baldwin utters what should now be a motto for us all: “Pie is never free.”
No, it isn’t.
SNL returns for its 43rd season on Sept. 30 with host Ryan Gosling and musical guest Jay-Z.
