Sarah Snook Wins Golden Globe for Best Actress in a Drama Series — For the Second Time

The fictional Roy family may not have been filled with winners, but “Succession” continues to produce awards season champions. Sarah Snook won the 2024 Golden Globe Award for Best Actress in a Drama Series, making it the second consecutive victory for the Australian actor who played Shiv Roy. Snook also won in 2022, for the series’ third season, before going out on top for the final season in 2024.

Snook triumphed over stiff competition. Also nominated were Helen Mirren, who’s racked up 17 nominations(!) and won three times (her last coming in 2007, when she was thrice nominated and took home two trophies); Emma Stone, an eight-time nominee and 2017 winner for “La La Land”; Keri Russell, who snagged her fourth nomination this year after winning for “Felicity” in 1999; Imelda Staunton, a three-time nominee, and Bella Ramsey, who earned her first nomination this year for “The Last of Us.”

Snook is amassing quite a trophy collection. In addition to her two Golden Globes, she’s won a Screen Actors Guild Award for Best Ensemble (“Succession”), a Critics Choice Award for Best Supporting Actress in a Drama Series, and numerous accolades from her home country. She also has “An Irish Person” TV Award, bestowed this year and recognized alongside other reputable organizations on IMDB’s awards page. Although I have yet to properly vet the intriguing organization myself, any voting body that sees fit to honor Snook and Sean Durkin’s work in “Dead Ringers” is one with, at least, comparable merits to others listed here.

Snook will soon find out if her Globes win is trumped by an Emmy Award. She’s currently nominated at the 2023 Emmy Awards, which — after a delay to accommodate the SAG and WGA strikes — will be held Monday, January 15 at 8pm ET on Fox. It’s her third nomination from the TV Academy, and her first in the Lead Actress category. She’ll go toe-to-toe with Russell and Ramsey again, as well as Sharon Horgan (“Bad Sisters”), Melanie Lynskey (“Yellowjackets”), and Elisabeth Moss (“The Handmaid’s Tale”). Before that, she’ll find out if she’s earned a 2024 Screen Actors Guild Award, when the nominations are announced January 10.
