Sarah Silverman is facing backlash for a post on her Instagram story supporting Israel amid the country’s ongoing war with Hamas and their siege of the Gaza Strip.

“Many are saying that it’s inhumane that Israel is cutting off water/electricity to Gaza,” reads the Jewish comedian’s post, originally shared by user @elianaeatz. “Israel made it pretty simple—’release the hostages and we will turn it back on.’ Instead of pleading with Hamas to release civilian hostages which include babies and toddlers there are politicians (cough cough AOC [Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez]) calling Israel inhumane.”

Earlier this month, Hamas — who acts as Palestine’s de facto government and rules the Gaza Strip — carried out a surprise attack at a music festival in Israel near the Gaza border. Hamas military leader Mohammed Deif said the deadly strike was a culmination of Israel’s decades-long occupation of Gaza and the country’s collective punishment of Palestinians, which the United Nations has argued is illegal.

The post on Silverman’s Instagram story continues: “If that isn’t enough for you: Israel does not need to supply Gaza with these resources (which they do, for free). If Hamas didn’t spend billions of dollars on terrorism they would be able to build the infrastructure to support themselves.”

But the 1967 Military Order No. 158 (aka “Water Supervision Law”) states that all sources of water in Palestine, whether or not it comes directly from Israel, first must get a permit approved by the Israeli Military Commander, and every installation or resource built without one will be confiscated. Either way, the U.N. also recognizes access to clean water as a fundamental human right.

“We’ve officially reached the ‘they actually don’t deserve water and electricity’ moment in mainstream discourse,” one Twitter user responded. Others chimed in saying: “Sarah Silverman really said well maybe those children shouldn’t have voted for Hamas if they wanted water,” and saying the comedian’s post was “casually calling for genocide on social media.”

The escalated violence between Israel’s military and Hamas has prompted some artists, including Bruno Mars, to cancel concerts in Tel Aviv. Meanwhile, Quentin Tarantino paid a visit to an Israeli military base last week to meet with residents and troops from the Israel Defense Forces in an effort to “boost morale.”
