Sarah Michelle Gellar loves spooky season so much that not even a real ghost can keep her up at night!

During an exclusive interview with PEOPLE about her new Thumbtack partnership, the Scream 2 actress, 46, opened up about spending the night at a haunted hotel — and the unlikely thing that happened to her there.

“When I was younger, I stayed in a haunted room at the Hotel del Coronado," Gellar says, referring to the historic Coronado, Calif. beach resort that opened in 1888. "Years ago, you used to be able to ask for that room and stay in there."

The hotel is supposedly haunted by a ghost named Kate Morgan, an American woman who died after checking into the site in 1892, according to the hotel’s official website.

When asked if she experienced any paranormal encounters herself, Gellar says with a laugh: “Yeah. My weird experience was that I slept through the night. I slept great.”

While she didn't get the paranormal encounter she may have hoped for, she still enjoyed a lovely stay.

Gellar’s positive experiences with the spooky are part of her home life too.

Her family follows in her horror-loving footsteps, she tells PEOPLE, especially her 11-year-old son Rocky who is “obsessed with horror movies.” (She also shares daughter Charlotte, 14, with her husband of 21 years, Freddie Prinze Jr.)

Gellar adds that decorating for Halloween is “always a big thing” at her house, although she admits one family member has a fear of creepy decor.

“We have to be careful because my little dog does not like skeletons,” the actress says. “A couple of houses away from us has this seven-foot skeleton, and yeah, he can't walk by it. So we have to be cautious in what we choose, but he's fine with spiders.”

The Wolf Pack  producer is bringing her love of sinister things to Thumbtack’s new “Haunted Homes Hotline” campaign, for which she will help two lucky callers determine whether their home is actually haunted or just needs a little love from the home service’s expert team.

While she does believe some houses can have their own mysterious “energies,” she’s also pretty certain that it’s usually just the home settling when things go bump in the night.

“Houses, they have noises all on their own. I think I hear my kids walking in the hallways at night, and I'll go out to go catch them and see which one of them it is, but there's never anyone there,” she explains. “It's the house settling.”
