Sarah McLachlan Is Ready to Get Back on the Road — but Not Without Her Granola (Exclusive)

Next summer, McLachlan will embark on The Fumbling Towards Ecstasy 30th Anniversary Tour

Thirty years after the release of Fumbling Towards Ecstasy, Sarah McLachlan is eager to celebrate her music with a live audience once again.

In light of the exciting announcement, the "Angel" singer opened up about what inspired her to get back on the road for The Fumbling Towards Ecstasy 30th Anniversary Tour, revealed what her tour essentials are and looked back on the 30 years since she released her hit album.

"Somebody said to me, 'Hey, do you know it's almost 30 years since Fumbling Towards Ecstasy?' And of course I had no idea because I live under a rock. And that was really it — it's like, 'Wow, I've got to do something,'" McLachlan, 55, tells PEOPLE.

She adds, "I haven't been on tour since 2016. So I thought, it was a really important record for me, and I just thought it would be really fun to get up there and play the whole thing."

The Fumbling Towards Ecstasy 30th Anniversary Tour, which will feature Allison Russell and Feist as special guests, will kick off on May 25 in Seattle and she'll make stops in major cities like Salt Lake City, Kansas City, Chicago, Toronto, Boston and Nashville before wrapping on July 6 in Sugar Land, Texas.

McLachlan indeed plans to play the album from start to finish — but she's still deciding if she'll stay true to the originals or "mess with them a little bit."

Fumbling Towards Ecstasy was first released on Oct. 22, 1993 via Le Studio. It topped the charts in Canada and was certified platinum within a few weeks, selling over 3 million copies worldwide to date. $1 per ticket will be donated to the non-profit Sarah McLachlan School of Music, which provides music instruction at no cost to children and youth facing barriers to access.

Looking back on the 30 years since, McLachlan jokes that her biggest change is that she's "gotten old."

"Well, actually I didn't have kids back then. I have two kids, well, they're almost adults. I have an almost 22-year-old and an almost 17-year-old. So that's probably been the most monumental shift in my life," she says of her daughters, Taja Summer and India Ann, whom she says will be present at her shows.

She continues, "And I think one of the things about this record, it was the easiest record I ever wrote. I was single for the first time in my adult life and felt very unencumbered and free to be very selfish. And so I got to just spend all my time working on the record and feeling free to do so."

After Fumbling Towards Ecstasy, the singer-songwriter released albums like Surfacing, Mirrorball, Afterglow, Wintersong, Laws of Illusion, Shine on and Wonderland. Reflecting on her decades-long career, McLachlan says she's still pinching herself.

"I am grateful for the fact that I still get to do this after 30 years. Exceedingly grateful. I honestly still pinch myself that this is the thing that I absolutely love to do. People pay me for it," she says. "I still can't believe that some days. It's like I'm able to make an amazing living doing this thing that I absolutely love. So I just consider myself incredibly lucky because of that."

While on tour, the "When She Loved Me" singer says her tour essentials include "some good books" and "accessibility to nature."

"That's one thing I'm going to really miss, is getting out into the woods, so I'm going to have to do a little research before I go to be able to find some good places to hike. I'm thinking about taking my dogs with me," she says. "I'm probably going to make a whole s---load of my granola before I leave."
