Lotus the kitten is living large thanks to a lucky break.

On August 29, Sarah Jessica Parker shared on Instagram that she had adopted the rescue cat who played Carrie Bradshaw's pet, Shoe Bradshaw, in And Just Like That....

In the post, Parker, 58, wrote that Shoe's real name is Lotus, which was given to him by the Connecticut Humane Society (CHS) — the shelter that cared for the kitten before he made it big.

"Lotus and his littermates arrived at CHS just after Christmas last year with their mom. The family that had them was unable to care for the whole litter, and they were brought to the Connecticut Humane Society to find new homes," Kathryn Schubert, CHS's marketing and communications manager, tells PEOPLE about the feline's beginnings.

After arriving at CHS, Lotus and his siblings received support from the shelter's staff and volunteers to help them get "big and strong."

Once the Lotus was a little more independent, fame came calling.

"One of our wonderful foster families is Dorothy and Bill Berloni, who run the William Berloni Theatrical Animals company. They had reached out to see if there were any kittens here at CHS who needed a foster home and who might do well for a filming opportunity on And Just Like That..." Schubert explains.

William Berloni Theatrical Animals helps movies, television shows, and theatrical productions find animal stars, train them, and keep them safe during productions.

"Lotus was selected from his litter, and he lived in foster care with the Berlonis while filming; the rest is history! The William Berloni Theatrical Animals company has worked with CHS for almost 50 years, and CHS was thrilled to be a part of this opportunity,' Schubert adds.

The naturally gifted feline actor must have made an impression because the "cute and playful" cat found his famous home shortly after arriving on the set of the Max show.

"CHS was informed soon after Lotus had started filming with Sarah Jessica Parker that she was interested in adopting him," Schubert says.

Lotus and the rest of his littermates have all been adopted since, but CHS still has hundreds of wonderful rescue pets looking for forever homes.

"It's wonderful to be able to use this incredible adoption to spread the word about other pets in the shelter that could use support, whether that's from more people adopting, or volunteering, or giving back through donations so that more pets like Lotus can get all the care they need," Schubert says.
