The Duchess of York's daughters — Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie — reportedly played a role in how they met

Sarah Ferguson is thinking of Matthew Perry following the Friends actor's death at age 54.

On Sunday, the Duchess of York, who is popularly known as Fergie, remembered the star with a touching tribute and two throwback photos on Instagram.

“I remember being thrilled to have met a natural talent, comedian and brilliant actor. It is a tragedy to lose you so early in life, rest in peace dear Matthew … you have given so much joy and laughter to so many,” Fergie wrote.

The Duchess of York, 63, posted two undated photos with Perry. The first showed her posing with the Friends actor and his castmates Jennifer Aniston, Courteney Cox, Matt LeBlanc and David Schwimmer (Lisa Kudrow was missing), and the second snap showed Fergie with Perry and LeBlanc near Big Ben in London.

The second photo appears to be a behind-the-scenes snap from the Duchess of York’s cameo in Friends, filmed when the show traveled across the pond to film the season 4 episode “The One with Ross's Wedding,” which was set in London. The episode aired in 1998 and saw Ross Geller (Schwimmer) accidentally say Rachel Green’s name (played by Aniston) as he married Emily (Helen Baxendale). Before the big day, Joey Tribbiani (LeBlanc) toured the British capital and bumped into Prince Andrew’s ex-wife, who joined him to film a video message for Chandler Bing (Perry).

The character of Joey says, "Say hi to my friend and tell him you like my hat."

Playing herself, Fergie asks, "Okay, so um, what's your friend's name?"

“Hi, Chandler. Joey says you don't really like his hat, but I think it's kind of dashing,” Fergie playfully said of the plush Union Jack cap.

Joey begins to explain that he was trying to find his way to Buckingham Palace when he bumped into the royal, but he gets cut off by Ross entering the room.

Citing the book I'll Be There for You: The One About Friends by Kelsey Miller, the Daily Mail reported that the Duchess of York made the appearance at the urging of Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie. Miller wrote that Fergie was “coaxed into the appearance by her daughters,” who were 10 and 8 in 1998 and reportedly fans of the hit NBC sitcom.

Over the weekend, Perry died by an apparent drowning at a Los Angeles-area home on Saturday.

"We are heartbroken by the tragic loss of our beloved son and brother," his family said in an exclusive statement to PEOPLE. "Matthew brought so much joy to the world, both as an actor and a friend. You all meant so much to him and we appreciate the tremendous outpouring of love."

According to the Los Angeles Fire Department, first responders arrived at the residence at 4:07 p.m. on Saturday.

“An adult male patient was deceased prior to first response arrival," an LAFD spokesperson told PEOPLE. “The patient was found by a bystander who had repositioned the victim where the head was out of water" in a freestanding jacuzzi. "Firefighters pulled the victim out of the jacuzzi and did a quick medical assessment to find he was deceased.”

Per TMZ, sources said first responders were called to the residence for cardiac arrest and that no drugs were found at the scene. The news outlet also obtained 911 dispatch audio in which "drowning" is referenced.

On Sunday, the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner's Office confirmed to PEOPLE that an autopsy has been completed and results are pending a toxicology report, which can take weeks to come through.

An online record has the status of Perry's cause of death currently listed as "deferred" since it's “pending additional investigation.” PEOPLE has also confirmed that the LAPD Robbery-Homicide Division is handling Perry's death investigation, and "foul play is not suspected at this time." They declined to comment on what may or may not have been recovered on the scene, as "the investigation is ongoing."

Best known for his Friends role, Perry played the sarcastic and commitment-phobe Chandler for 10 seasons, landing an Emmy nomination in 2002. Friends was the hottest show of the 1990s, with Perry, Anison, Cox, Kudrow, LeBlanc and Schwimmer ultimately earning a whopping $1 million each per episode.

Despite his success, Perry struggled with addiction behind the scenes, seeking treatment 15 times over the years. He told Britain’s BBC Radio 2 in 2016 that he didn’t remember filming seasons 3 through 6 of Friends.

"I didn't know how to stop," he said in his 2022 PEOPLE cover story, timed to the release of his memoir, Friends, Lovers and the Big Terrible Thing. "The disease and the addiction is progressive, so it gets worse and worse as you grow older."

Of reaching a positive place in his sobriety journey, Perry added, "I'm most surprised with my resilience. The way that I can bounce back from all this torture and awfulness."
