Sara Gilbert: Being a Child Star 'Saved My Life'

Despite the pressure that comes with being in the spotlight, Sara Gilbert says her experience as a child star saved her.

"I was lucky, for me personally, I was so miserable in school and having that life – the creative outlet kind of saved my life in ways," the former Roseanne star said Friday on The Talk. "But I think that's a very unique set of circumstances and I think it still comes with its downsides even in the best set of circumstances."

While Gilbert, 41, views her time as a child actress positively, the Talk co-host host added that it doesn't mean she would necessarily want her children in the spotlight, although she does believe one of her children "would be suited for it probably."

"I've though about it. I feel like the pressures outweigh – how many people don't do well, how many people die," Gilbert said. "The pitfalls are so extreme. Not very many people are able to continue working and I don't want the highlight of their life being when they were 10 years old."

Gilbert has three children – sons Levi, 11, and Rhodes, 1, and daughter Sawyer, 8.

"I'd rather them be in theatre class, do things with their peers, doing stuff in school if they want and start working later."
