Sara Evans' new music video covers the subject of domestic violence
Sara Evans is getting some help from a very special someone for her new music video — her daughter Audrey!
In the powerful new video for “Pride,” which PEOPLE is exclusively premiering, the country singer enlists her daughter to star in the clip, which features a storyline centering on toxic relationships and domestic violence.
“When I watch the video, it does evoke emotion in me every single time I watch,” says Evans, 53. “I never would've dreamed 10 years ago that I'd be sitting here with an album like this in and a video like that and this discussion going on. But all things work for the good, and so there is going to be good that comes from this.
The video begins with Audrey, 19, covering up a bruise with makeup before heading out to her job in a gentleman’s club (“You left a mark on my face and brought a dozen red flags in a vase,” her mom sings). Throughout the song, Audrey takes notice of a female customer showing signs of abuse, and things end triumphantly when Audrey steps in to protect her, throwing a drink in the woman’s partner’s face.

The video and the single are personal for Evans, who dealt with domestic abuse in her marriage to husband Jay Barker. After she filed for divorce in 2021, Barker, 51, was arrested and charged with felony assault with a deadly weapon following an altercation with the country star, her daughter and his car in January 2022 (he later entered a best interest plea and traded the charge down to a misdemeanor reckless endangerment charge and was put on probation).
Evans and Barker have since reconciled, as she announced on her new podcast Diving in Deep with Sara Evans — but she’s telling her difficult story on her new album Unbroke, her first record of new material in seven years (out June 7), on which “Pride” is the first single.
Audrey says she’s been struck by watching the growth her mom has shown over the course of writing the record.

Sara Evans in "Pride" music video“You go from being in that position, and you feel stuck. Then you leave the situation and you end up being sad. Then you feel free,” she says. “Then coming to terms with whether she wanted to stay or leave, and then the whole process. It was really interesting to see what emotions came along with it. It’s a very emotional song and video but overall, I think it should be more hopeful for girls who are in that position and in toxic relationships.”
Evans adds that Barker’s support of “Pride” helped her realize that their extensive therapy had helped him grow, too, as he insisted she sing the song in first person as written, and not change it to third person to protect him.
“He said, ‘Absolutely not. Hell no. You’re singing that song just as you wrote it, because that’s your story and that’s your truth,’” she recalls. “He was like, ‘You’re not changing anything about that song. That song is the best song you’ve ever written.’ He’s super proud of it.”
