Sara Bareilles knew that a "leap of faith" was necessary to secure an engagement ring that truly represents her love for her fiancé, Joe Tippett.

The singer and actress took to Instagram on Friday to reveal the new ring to fans as well as share how she and Tippett stumbled upon it. Bareilles shared a carousel of "hand holding things" images, showcasing the ring while she held a variety of household items. In her post, the star also included a clear image of just the ring on her hand.

"We have been engaged for a year and this is the ring we chose- we picked it up yesterday," Bareilles captioned the post before detailing the ring's meaningful origin.

Referencing her previous gold engagement ring, which she has worn since Tippett popped the question in December 2022, Bareilles shared, "We bought the gold leaf at an arts fair in Mexico City last December because looking for a ring started to feel like it was distorting and eclipsing the beauty of choosing each other."

The Grammy winner previously spoke about the placeholder gold ring to PEOPLE in June 2023, explaining that it was purchased on a whim. "We found this cheap little ring in a market that we both love, and we were like, 'That's the thing for now!' "

She then revealed on Instagram that Tippett found the new ring "at an antique store upstate."

Initially, Bareilles was nervous to say yes to the new ring because "it didn’t fit my finger so I was scared to take the leap." She further rationalized that she was on the "hunt for the 'right ring' " to replace the gold one from Mexico, "so I balked at it."

The couple left the antique store without the ring, but on the drive home, they "talked about the concept of the ring. That it is something he wants to give me, not just get for me."

The result of that conversation was Bareilles concluding "That the leap of faith of not quite knowing if it was 'the one' is just that. A leap of faith. And isn’t that life?"

She explained, "We got it the next day and got it sized and now I just love that I see him when I look at it," also writing, "I look at this ring and think of his big blue eyes and how sometimes they are pleading with me to let go and grow into something new with him."

The couple first met while on the set of the musical adaptation of Adrienne Shelly's 2007 film Waitress. Two years later, they made their first public appearance as a couple at the opening night of The New Group's play All the Fine Boys.

Bareilles and Tippett may have decided on a more permanent engagement ring, but according to the couple, they still aren't planning on rushing down the aisle.

"There’s just so many questions," the Waitress: The Musical star explained to PEOPLE during another conversation. “We talk about it all the time, should we just go to city hall and just do the thing? There's another part of me that is like, ‘But wouldn't it be fun to just have a great party with our friends and family?’ And so I don't know, we're still figuring it out.”
