During the June 15 episode of The Real Housewives of Dubai, Sara Al Madani declared, “I want to be different,” and she explained how her many tattoos are a part of that.

“In the Arab world, it’s not accepted [to have tattoos],” she explained. “A lot of people, they judge me. But then the funny part is, all of them get their eyebrows tattooed, but then my shoulder tattoo’s a problem.”

As Sara noted in the episode, she has more than just shoulder ink. When a photographer asked how many tattoos she had, she said she “lost count.”

She continued, “I think this kind of thinking and this mentality [regarding tattoos] is being diluted in the UAE and Dubai. A woman can decide to do whatever she wants — no judgment, no whatever.”

Sara shared her overall approach to her style: “I don’t want to fit in. I want to be different. Who cares what people say?” She explained, “I don’t dress the way I dress to satisfy people’s expectation of me as an Arab woman. No, the way I dress is by choice. I think being modest and conservative is just a way of living. I’m not forced into it. I’m not choosing it based on anything. I just, as a woman, I love it.”
