Saoirse Ronan says Greta Gerwig 'has been a massive motivation' for her to direct

After working together on multiple projects, Saoirse Ronan is feeling inspired by Greta Gerwig. The actor has revealed that she wants to try her hand at directing now that she’s seen Gerwig take on that role for both Little Women and Lady Bird.

“I think I’ve always wanted to,” Ronan told Deadline of becoming a director. “When I think about when I was younger and I would do press for films, they would always ask me, ‘What was it like to work with all the famous people?’ I’d be like, ‘It was great.’ But the director is who I always loved the most, and they were the one that I wanted to, make happy and I wanted to be close to them. It’s something that I would absolutely love to do and yeah, it’s just because I’ve picked up so many things from other directors that I’ve worked with. Watching Greta, and seeing what she’s done over the last few years, has been a massive motivation for me to give it a go.”

Luckily, she’s already got one star confirmed to act in whatever she directs. “Timmy said he’d be in a film that I’d direct so that’s good,” she said with a laugh. “If I can get Timothée Chalamet (who appears in both Lady Bird and Little Women), I’m sorted. There’s so many actors that I’ve worked with that I would absolutely love to direct.”

And when she was asked if she’d like to write whatever project she would direct, she was open to the idea. “I’m trying to write, and I’ve realized it takes a lot of discipline to write,” Ronan said. “So, I need to give myself a bit of a kick up the arse and do that.”

Little Women is now playing in theaters.
