Santa Fe Film Institute launches grants for local filmmakers

Apr. 8—Are you a filmmaker in Northern New Mexico? And are you looking for some money to get a project off the ground?

You may be in luck. The Santa Fe Film Institute and the Northern Rio Grande National Heritage Area have opened applications for two new grants targeted at filmmakers based in Santa Fe, Rio Arriba and Taos counties.

The grants — the Northern Rio Grande National Heritage Area grant and Los Luceros grant — total up to $10,000 and $5,000, respectively, the film institute said in a news release.

The Northern Rio Grande National Heritage Area grant is accepting applications from filmmakers with a focus on narrative and documentary projects, the release says, while the Los Luceros grant is focused on filmmakers "dedicated to creating a film made at or about the Los Luceros site."

The application period opened March 20, and the deadline to apply is May 31.

"The stories we tell through film have the incredible ability to shape and preserve our heritage and traditions," Santa Fe Film Institute President Jacques Paisner said in a statement. "By supporting local filmmakers, [Santa Fe Film Institute] and [Northern Rio Grande National Heritage Area] will continue enriching Northern New Mexico's film communities and ensure that our unique cultures are celebrated for generations to come."
