There was no greater surprise at last year’s Cannes Film Festival than Jonathan Glazer’s “The Zone of Interest.” Glazer, a British avant-garde filmmaker found himself at the center of Oscar buzz for his adaptation of Martin Amis‘ 2014 novel about Rudolf Hoss (Christian Friedel), the commandant of Auschwitz and his wife. The hauntingly quiet film won the Grand Jury Prize. At the heart of the film is Sandra Huller as Hedwig Hoss. Here are five reasons why we think she’ll reap a Best Supporting Actress nomination.

She’s in contention for another film
Huller is the lead in Justine Triet’s Palme D’Or winning courtroom drama, “Anatomy of a Fall” and is expected to number among the five Best Actress nominees. A dozen performers have competed in both the lead and supporting races in the same year. She could be the lucky 13th, as voters who watch both of her movies will be impressed by her range.

This film will be nominated for Best Picture
We have this movie making the cut and being among the 10 contenders. It won the top prize from the LA film critics and contended at the Globes and the upcoming PGA Awards. That latter nomination is especially telling as that group has a great track record at previewing the Oscar line-up.

She’s essentially a co-lead
The film is very much a two-hander and centered on Hedwig as much as Rudolf.  The more screen time you have, the more likely you are to be remembered by voters. Recent supporting nominees with substantial roles include LaKeith Stanfield (“Judas and the Black Messiah”), Maria Bakalova (“Borat Subsequent Movie Film”), and Anthony Hopkins (“The Two Popes”).

She has an Oscar clip
Screen time and visibility are paramount, but the content is even more important. While “The Zone of Interest” is largely a film steeped in subtlety, Huller’s character reveals an array of emotional colors. In an explosive moment of weakness, Hedwig channels the pain she feels through verbal abuse of her house staff. It’s a disturbing, powerful moment that will be sure to stick in voters minds.

She’s a passion pick
Huller was cited by various critics groups and the Gotham Awards. And she just made the final five at the BAFTAs. Such passionate support passion is a candidate’s most powerful asset when trying to crash the party on Oscar nominations morning. Jessica Buckley’s BAFTA bid foreshadowed her Oscar nomination for “The Lost Daughter.”
