Sandra Hüller really lucked out when it came to the actor playing her young son, Milo Machado Graner, in the dramatic mystery “Anatomy of a Fall.” She described him as the perfect scene partner specifically because she didn’t have to take a lot of responsibility around him. “He is a very independent person. He’s someone who makes his own decisions and he had a great coach on set. So I never had the feeling that he was lost and that I would have to help him. It was literally just a true partner, like every grown up partner I could wish for,” she tells Gold Derby during our recent webchat (watch the exclusive video interview above).

But what Hüller really loved about “Anatomy” was the ambiguity of everything surrounding the film, a word she only learned of a couple of years ago. “There is no clear yes or no most of the time or decisions are right or wrong. There is a certain flow going on and you just have to give in and surrender. You can shape a lot of things with decisions that you make.”

SEE‘Anatomy of a Fall’: Sandra Hüller is Oscar-worthy in Justine Triet’s ‘intense’ thriller [Review Round-Up]

Hüller has two movies in the Oscar race this year that will both be released next month. “Anatomy of a Fall,” from director Justine Triet, has Hüller playing Sandra, an author whose husband dies from an apparent fall and becomes the main suspect in his murder. The only other person who can vouch for her is her son who is visually impaired. “The Zone of Interest,” the latest from Jonathan Glazer, sees Rudolf Höss and his wife Hedwig raising their family and trying to build a perfect life while living, literally, next door to Auschwitz which Höss is the commander of. At this year’s Cannes Film Festival, both films ended up taking the top two prizes: “Anatomy of a Fall” won the Palme d’Or and “The Zone of Interest” won the Grand Prix.

When it came to “The Zone of Interest,” saying yes to that project was an incredibly difficult choice to make. “It is so heavy and it requires something from an actor that is sort of beyond that doesn’t really have anything to do with acting, especially as a German person. You have to go to places that you don’t want to be.” When it came to embodying the character of Hedwig, Hüller made a conscious choice to stay out of her headspace. Normally she tries to wander inside the character’s body in her imagination. “I was wondering how much of my own capability of loving, feeling, being empathetic I would give to her and I decided together with Jonathan [Glazer] that she wouldn’t have anything of it.”
