SAN ANGELO — San Angelo city officials have announced their plans for the former San Angelo Standard-Times building, according to a city news release.

The building at 34 W. Harris Ave. will become the new home for several city departments, including the Fire Marshal's Office, Public Works and Utility Billing Departments, and the Juvenile Magistrate.

At the city council meeting Tuesday, April 5, 2022, council members approved renovating the building with a $135,000 task order to KFW Architects AIA for a Stage One Plan Design. The project will also use $238,325 from the General Fund's Fund Balance.

On April 20, 2021, the city council approved the purchase of the Standard-Times building. At the time, San Angelo Mayor Brenda Gunter said the city was exploring options to turn the building into a possible site for a new police station.

What is happening with the Standard-Times?

Though the San Angelo Standard-Times had been at 34 W. Harris Ave. since 1951, it has worked from various locations around town since its first print edition in 1884.

The Standard-Times' new base of operations, the Continental Building at 17 S. Chadbourne St., is the sixth site in the newspaper's 138-year history.

The Standard-Times staff is — and will remain — based in the community and report on news in San Angelo and its surrounding communities across the Concho Valley.
