On Full Frontal, Samantha Bee took on President Trump’s proposed 2018 financial plan, formally titled “America First: A Budget Blueprint to Make America Great Again” — because of course it is — but budget director Mick Mulvaney has his own pet name for it, “The Hard Power Budget,” which is a seemingly appropriate name for its unprecedented increase in defense spending, while scaling back almost every other department. Mulvaney sees it as the same kind of “reprioritizing” that any family would do.
One of the many government programs that would be hit with budget cuts is the Environmental Protection Agency’s Energy Star, which sets standards for energy efficient appliances. Under this proposed budget, Americans may have to rethink how they do their chores.
But things took a serious turn when Bee looked back at a blackout during the 1995 summer heat wave that took the lives of more than 700 people in Chicago, a tragedy that may have been prevented by Energy Star-rated energy efficient air conditioners. But Mulvaney doesn’t seem concerned about history possibly repeating itself.
Full Frontal With Samantha Bee airs Wednesdays at 10:30 p.m. on TBS.
