Samantha Bee takes shot at Steve King after comparing Nazis to Republicans

On Full Frontal With Samantha Bee, Bee slammed Rep. Steve King for what appears to be a favorable stance toward white supremacists. On a recent trip to Austria, the longtime Iowa Republican met with members of the Freedom Party, which was founded by a former Nazi SS officer and is currently led by Heinz-Christian Strache, who was formerly associated with neo-Nazi groups. None of this comes as a surprise to those familiar with King’s rhetoric. What’s odd is King’s presence in Austria in the first place.

“You might be wondering, ‘Why was Steve King even meeting with a Nazi-led party in Austria anyway?’” Bee said. “Turns out he was on a Holocaust memorial trip. Awww, he must have been so disappointed to learn that Holocaust memorials usually take the anti-Holocaust side.”

That’s right. King was on a trip to visit Holocaust memorials. Though the trip was paid for by From the Depths, a nonprofit that seeks to educate lawmakers about the Holocaust, he took out time to meet with a group affiliated with Nazis. After the meeting, King said of the Freedom Party, “If they were in America pushing the platform they push, they would be Republicans.”

This gave Bee the perfect opportunity. “Did Steve King just say Nazis are Republicans?” she asked. “So tomorrow morning when you read the headline ‘Samantha Bee says Republicans are Nazis,’ remember, I didn’t say that — Steve King said it.”

That last comment by King may have been the final straw for some Republicans. After years of sending racist tweets and supporting white nationalists, King finally lost the support of the National Republican Congressional Committee and some financial backers, including Land O’Lakes and Purina. Still, many in the GOP remain quiet when it comes to King’s overt racism and affinity for white supremacists.

Discussing Republican reactions to King, Bee joked, “When Paul Ryan was asked about King’s thoughts on what color our babies should be, he yelled, ’Tax cuts!’, threw a smoke bomb, and disappeared.”
