Two years after storming the Oscars with three nominations including a Best Original Screenplay win for her debut feature film, “Promising Young Woman,” director and writer Emerald Fennell is back. The filmmaker’s latest is called “Saltburn,” a twisted family drama starring recent Best Supporting Actor nominee Barry Keoghan, “Euphoria” star Jacob Elordi, former Oscar nominees Rosamund Pike and Richard E. Grant, and “Promising Young Woman” lead Carey Mulligan in a small role.

On Wednesday, MGM and Amazon Studios released the first trailer for “Saltburn,” which will debut at the Telluride Film Festival before opening the London Film Festival in October. The film hits theaters on November 24 before later matriculating onto the Amazon Prime Video streaming service.

“My favorite thing in general is sympathy for the devil,” Fennell told Vanity Fair in an interview published on Tuesday. “The sorts of people that we can’t stand, the sorts of people who are abhorrent—if we can love them, if we can fall in love with these people, if we can understand why this is so alluring, in spite of its palpable cruelty and unfairness and sort of strangeness, if we all want to be there too, I think that’s just such an interesting dynamic.”

Set in 2006, the film focuses on a young Oxford University student named Oliver Quick (Keoghan) who “finds himself drawn into the world of the charming and aristocratic Felix Catton (Elordi), who invites him to Saltburn, his eccentric family’s sprawling estate, for a summer never to be forgotten.”

Fennell said she first spotted Keoghan in “The Killing of a Scared Deer” and found him to be an irresistible performer. “I just thought, That’s a once-in-a-lifetime performer. There’s no equivalent,” she told Vanity Fair. “He’s just so compelling. He’s got a kind of sex appeal and a vulnerability and a physical presence and a sort of darkness, or he can at least communicate these things in a way that is very rare.”

Keoghan is already a darkhorse Best Actor contender for the film, which is one of Amazon’s big players in awards season.
