The new movie "Saltburn" has been garnering attention not only for having Jacob Elordi, Gen Z's favorite heartthrob, on its cast list but also for its disturbing bathtub scene.

The psychological thriller and dark comedy was released in the United Kingdom on Nov. 17, 2023, and in limited theatrical release in the U.S. on the same day. Directed by Emerald Fennell, Barry Keoghan plays main character Oliver Quick, who grows obsessed with classmate Felix Catton (Elordi).

Set in mid-2000s England, Felix is a rich student who feels bad for Quick’s family situation and invites him to his estate for the summer and that’s where things go downhill.

Quick meets Felix’s sister Venetia, mother Elspeth and father Sir James and encounters classmate and Felix’s cousin Farleigh again.

Everyone feels bad for Quick and allows him to stay because of his poor life but little do they know that Quick has been playing mind games with them the whole time.

Is 'Saltburn' a horror movie?

"Saltburn" is a psychological thriller and dark comedy.

What is 'Saltburn' about?

Venetia (Alison Oliver, left), Felix (Jacob Elordi) and Oliver (Barry Keoghan) unravel over a summer spent at the opulent Saltburn mansion.
Venetia (Alison Oliver, left), Felix (Jacob Elordi) and Oliver (Barry Keoghan) unravel over a summer spent at the opulent Saltburn mansion.

Without giving too much away, "Saltburn" is about poor student Oliver Quick, who is dealing with family issues and befriends rich classmate at Oxford, Felix Catton. Felix is the popular student that men want to be and women want to be with. He provides friendship and support to Quick and offers that he spend the summer at his family estate.

Quick, in an attempt to fit in with the rich family, forms unique relationships with each member, observing them and saying what they want to hear — or what he thinks they want to hear. He plays a game but is eventually caught and things go downhill for the Catton family.

What is the meaning behind the movie 'Saltburn'?

There isn’t just one meaning behind "Saltburn." It’s about desire and economic class disparities. The Catton family is uber-wealthy and seems to be living this lush life with their own set of rules. Rules that Quick tries very hard to fit into.

The beginning of "Saltburn" seems to highlight style vs. substance, such as when Quick is debating with Farleigh over his paper and the only criticism Farleigh has is of the use of the word “thus” seven times.

Quick is in pursuit of style throughout the movie.

The story also has ties to Greek mythology with Theseus and the Minotaur. During a crucial scene in "Saltburn," someone is killed under a statue of a Minotaur.

The story of Theseus ends with the “hero,” who isn’t really a hero, killing the Minotaur, ditching the person who helped him navigate the labyrinth the Minotaur was in and inheriting a whole kingdom because he tricked his father into taking his own life.

Someone had to be blamed for killing the Minotaur, so the labyrinth builder, Daedelus, and his son Icarus were imprisoned. Daedelus created wings for him and his son to use to escape. Icarus, who was in awe of the invention, flew too close to the sun and the wings melted.

In "Saltburn," Felix wore wings to a party and this could signal how rich his family was or how close to the sun they were flying in aspects of being a part of the upper class.

Spoiler alert: 'Saltburn' bathtub scene

Describing the "Saltburn" bathtub scene in suitable terms is difficult. It occurs when Felix is being watched by Quick, pleasuring himself in their shared bathtub. Quick enters the bathroom shortly after Felix leaves and gets on all fours to drink the bathtub water.
