New material is coming from the bestselling Irish novelist. Rooney’s U.S. publisher, Farrar, Straus and Giroux, announced that her new novel, Intermezzo, will publish this fall.

“Through the components of everyday life, Sally Rooney builds a world of ethical complexity that matches that of the great nineteenth-century novels,” says Mitzi Angel, Publisher and President of Farrar, Straus and Giroux, in a statement obtained by PEOPLE.

Intermezzo follows the lives of two brothers navigating life after the death of their father. Peter, a seemingly unshakeable lawyer in his thirties, finds himself self-medicating in the aftermath, while trying to balance relationships with two different women.

Ivan, Peter’s 22-year-old brother, is a self-described "loner" and competitive chess player. He becomes infatuated with an older woman, whose life quickly becomes intertwined with his own.

Both siblings, as well as their lovers, find themselves entering a phase of their lives marked by grief and hope.

“Intermezzo is an astonishing novel: It marks yet another advance in the work of a writer who captures our life and our times with more stylistic elan and generosity of spirit than ever,” Angel says.

Faber, Rooney’s publisher in the United Kingdom, also teased the novel’s opening lines on X, formerly known as Twitter.
