Sally Jesse Raphael’s Still Got It — Along With Those Famous Red Glasses

Sally Jesse Raphael returned to television when she joined Matt Lauer on Today where they discussed her career, the current state of daytime talk, and, of course, those big red glasses. It’s been more than 33 years since Raphael and those glasses first appeared on our TV screens, and since then, the two have become synonymous. But according to Rafael, those red glasses, seared in the collective consciousness of America, almost didn’t make it onto her show.

“They put me on. They made a tape. They sent it to stations. Stations said, ‘We like her. Lose the red glasses,’” Raphael said.

But her producer, Burt Dubrow, saved the day.

Raphael recalled, “He went out, had my husband buy three pair of the ugliest glasses you can imagine. I put them on: one, two, three. The boss said, ‘Red. That’s much better.’”

Even at the age of 81, Raphael still believes she could host a successful talk show. When Lauer asked, she said without hesitation that she could easily do it.

“I don’t think you lose that,” Raphael said. “I think that a good talk show host has something called soul, and that soul doesn’t go away. It’s there.”
