SAG-sational! Inside the 2020 SAG Awards Beauty Prep of Jennifer Garner, Charlize Theron and More
Stars went all out for the second major awards show of 2020. And their hair and makeup pros are letting PEOPLE in on the gorgeous behind-the-scenes action before they made their way down the silver carpet. See how Jennifer Garner, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Charlize Theron and Joey King got glammed.
Jennifer Garner
The presenter’s gorgeous hair was inspired by “waves in a lake,” says hairstylist Kylee Heath, whose hand can be seen perefecting a few face-framing pieces. “Easy, silky and undone.” The pro’s power-trio: Virtue Volumizing Primer for body and “a little grit” so the style would hold, as well as the brand’s Healing Oil for shine and Texturizing Spray, which was “key to break up the waves.”
The Neutrogena spokeswoman’s makeup artist Genevieve Herr (left) opted for a “clean” look so as not to compete with the “bold, statement” made by her Dolce & Gabbana ballgown and Harry Winston jewelry. Her expert trick: “I always do foundation first, then I apply the concealer, that way it blends well into the foundation.” After applying the brand’s Healthy Skin Liquid Makeup in Soft Beige and Healthy Skin Radiant Cream Concealer in Sugar, the pro created a petal pink lip using Lip Show Lipstick in Center Stage.
Manicurist Deborah Lippmann (front, right) gave the star red nails to match her gown, while stylist Jill Lincoln takes a few last looks.
Catherine Zeta-Jones
Silver belle! To support her husband, The Kominsky Method nominee Michael Douglas, Zeta-Jones wore a shimmering Julien MacDonald dress, and got glammed by makeup artist Vincent Oquendo and hairstylist Chad Wood.
Oquendo says the icon’s makeup was inspired by another living legend, Catherine Deneuve. My main inspiration was [Deneuve in] Belle de Jour, with the bold black liner, soft buttery skin and flushed cheek. He used shades in the Maybelline Nudes of New York eyeshadow palette to “softly define her eyes.” Then he created the shape of her winged eye with the brand’s TattooStudio Gel Pencil in Deep Onyx and Hyper Easy Liquid Eyeliner in Pitch Black. “I finished her eyes with a couple of coats of the Maybelline Falsies Lash Lift Mascara on top and bottom lashes.” For her natural-looking flush, he applied Cheek Heat Gel Cream Blush in Nude Burn and contoured with the City Bronzer in 100 and 200.
Charlize Theron
“The look is a futuristic take on 1920s glamour,” says hairstylist Adir Abergel. “The minute I saw the clean lines of Charlize’s two-piece Givenchy Haute Couture outfit, I knew that I wanted the hair to mimic the qualities of the fabric — shiny and reflective.” So the pro added a “powerful” detail, a Tiffany diamond tennis bracelet, for “that extra shine and modern feel,” he says.
Abergel applied both Virtue Healing Oil, and Un-Frizz Cream on her clean, towel-dried hair. After creating her center part, he dried her hair with a Dyson Supersonic Hair Dryer Professional Edition. “To secure the jewelry, I braided a tiny cornrow along the center part, then with a very fine clear thread, I sewed the diamond tennis bracelet onto the braid foundation.” He locked the look in place with Shaping Spray.

Joey King
The Act nominee preps with her hairstylist Dimitri Giannetos, right, makeup artist Allan Avendaño, left, and a furry friend! Says her hair pro: “Joey was wearing a beautiful black floor-length Jason Wu gown, so we wanted her hair to be very modern and edgy to go along with that.” The two “leaned into the ’90s” cutting her longer bob into a shorter, layered hairstyle that day. After King washed her hair with Suave Professionals’ Collagen Infusion Shampoo and Conditioner, Giannetos sprayed the brand’s Refresh & Revive Dry Shampoo on her dry roots for volume, and completed the look with Flexible Control Finishing Hairspray “for an amazing wet-finish look!”
Avandaño says he went for a “femme fatale spy chic” look inspired by designer Jason Wu’s notes “to give a sexy smoke that elongated the eyes.” Avendaño started with King’s eyes so that he’d be able to wipe away any shadow fallout easily. After applying Urban Decay’s Eyeshadow Primer Potion Original, he used the brand’s 24/7 Glide-On Eye Pencil in Perversion, and with a dense pencil brush he “buffed out the liner into a cat eye shape” as well as the Smoke shade for depth. Next, he applied the Stranded shade from the Born to Run eyeshadow palette. “It added dimension, shimmer, and opened her eyes.” He perfected her complexion with Stay Naked The Fix Powder Foundation.
