SAG Awards film live blog: ‘Everything Everywhere All at Once’ completes an unprecedented sweep with best ensemble win [UPDATING LIVE]

The 2023 Screen Actors Guild Awards were held on Sunday, February 26, during a ceremony that streamed live over Netflix’s YouTube channel at 8:00pm Eastern/5:00pm Pacific from the Fairmont Century Plaza in Los Angeles. Presented by one of the largest voting bodies in the entertainment industry — the SAG-AFTRA union representing about 160,000 actors, announcers, broadcast journalists, and other media professionals — these awards often give us insight into what will happen at the Oscars. “The Banshees of Inisherin” and “Everything Everywhere All at Once” came into these awards tied with five nominations apiece including the top prize for best ensemble cast. Honoring a film for having the year’s best cast isn’t exactly the same as awarding the overall best film of the year, so the award hasn’t always agreed with the Oscar for Best Picture. Out of 27 times the ensemble prize has been handed out, it has matched Oscar’s Best Picture only 13 times (48%). However, the SAG Awards have presaged an Oscar upset multiple times: “Shakespeare in Love” over “Saving Private Ryan” (1998), “Crash” over “Brokeback Mountain” (2005), “Parasite” over “1917” (2019).

The SAG Awards agree with the Oscars much more often in the individual acting categories. Last year they matched four-for-four. In 2021 it was only two-for-four. But in 2020 it was four-for-four as well. So out of the last 12 acting winners at the SAG Awards, 10 went on to claim Oscars. Being celebrated by your fellow performers in SAG-AFTRA would be special enough, but those collecting trophies here would also be well advised to prepare another acceptance speech for a couple of weeks from now. 7:00pm — Stunt Ensemble in a Motion Picture — As always presented before the main show — though I think they should have moved it to the officially ceremony now that they’re on YouTube and not on a linear TV platform — this award went to “Top Gun: Maverick,” as was predicted by Gold Derby’s odds. The aerial showmanship of “Maverick” overtook the superhero battles of “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” and “The Batman,” plus the aquatic daring of “Avatar: The Way of Water” and the African warriors of “The Woman King.” This might also have been a sigh of relief for the film in general, as it has proved unlucky at the DGA, PGA, and BAFTA Awards in recent weeks.

8:51pm — Female Actor in a Supporting Role — After a long stretch of television awards, which included its fair share of surprises, we got a big shocker in this race. Jamie Lee Curtis won for her role in “Everything Everywhere All at Once” following victories by Angela Bassett (“Black Panther: Wakanda Forever”) at the Golden Globe and Critics Choice Awards, and Kerry Condon (“The Banshees of Inisherin”) at the BAFTA Awards. The narrative this year seemed to be shaping up as an overdue coronation for the legendary Bassett. But perhaps we’re on our way to an overdue coronation for the legendary Curtis. A Curtis win at the Oscars would be reminiscent of another legendary daughter of legendary actors, Laura Dern (“Marriage Story”).

8:59pm — Male Actor in a Supporting Role — “Everything Everywhere” doubles up, adding a win for Ke Huy Quan in this category. He’d been sweeping the supporting actor honors from critic and media groups this awards season, getting tripped up only at the BAFTAs wwhere Barry Keoghan (“Banshees”) surprised. It looks like Quan is back on track to pick up the Oscar too.

9:53pm — Female Actor in a Leading Role — Michelle Yeoh makes it three-for-three for “Everything Everywhere All at Once,” defeating Cate Blanchett (“TAR”) after Blanchett bester her at the Critics Choice and BAFTA Awards. This complicates the Oscar race in an exciting way since the industry groups (SAG and BAFTA) have now split between the two front-runners. Who wins the Oscar now?

10:00pm — Male Actor in a Leading Role — Brendan Fraser wins for “The Whale,” complicating another Oscar race. He really needed to win this after Austin Butler claimed the BAFTA Award for “Elvis.” But this means the industry groups, SAG and BAFTA, have split on both lead-acting races. Butler could have the edge at the Oscars since “Elvis” has more overall support from the academy and a Best Picture nomination. But Fraser has a moving narrative, a comeback story after years of struggle. Ask me later which way I think this is gonna go. I have some research to do.

10:06pm — Cast in a Motion Picture — “Everything Everywhere All at Once” completes its clean sweep of these awards, making history as the first film to win four SAG Awards. It has now swept the Directors Guild, Producers Guild, and Screen Actors Guild Awards, and that combo makes it the overwhelming favorite to win the Oscar for Best Picture. It didn’t have much luck at the BAFTA Awards, where it only won Best Editing, but on this side of the pond, it has been dominant. Could it even repeat its wins in the acting categories. Winning three acting races is incredibly rare.
