SAG Awards: ‘The Crown’ could tie ‘Downton Abbey’ with 3 wins for TV drama ensemble

“The Crown” is gearing up for its last hurrah at the SAG Awards, an organization that has bestowed a number of prizes onto the Netflix regal show over the years. It claimed the highly coveted TV drama ensemble prize twice (2019 and ’20), while individual winners through the years were Claire Foy (2016 and ’17), John Lithgow (2016) and Gillian Anderson (2020). Now the sixth and final season is hoping to prevail for a third time, which would tie it with “Downton Abbey” in this category at three total wins. (The all-time cast leader, “ER,” remains on top with four victories.)

Season 6 faces off in the TV drama ensemble race against fellow nominees “The Gilded Age,” “The Last of Us,” “The Morning Show” and “Succession.” Elizabeth Debicki is “The Crown’s” only solo acting nominee this year, with her co-nominees in the TV drama actress category being Jennifer Aniston (“The Morning Show”), Bella Ramsey (“The Last of Us”), Keri Russell (“The Diplomat”) and Sarah Snook (“Succession”).

Unlike the five prior seasons of the show, this cycle streamed on Netflix in two distinct parts, with the first four episodes detailing the death of Princess Diana (Debicki) and the final six episodes centered around the Golden Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II (Imelda Staunton). In all, 15 cast members have been nominated as members of the Season 6 ensemble — see the list below.

All six installments of “The Crown” received SAG Award nominations in the TV drama ensemble race, with Season 1 losing to “Stranger Things” (2016), Season 2 losing to “This Is Us” (2017), Seasons 3 and 4 both prevailing, and Season 5 losing to “The White Lotus” (2022). Comparatively, “Downton Abbey” was nominated a total of five times, triumphing in 2012, ’14 and ’15, and losing to both “Breaking Bad” (2013) and “Stranger Things” (2016).

“Downton Abbey” told the tale of the inhabitants of a country estate in the early 20th century, with the aristocratic Crawley family living upstairs and their various servants residing downstairs. It often boasted the biggest and most international ensemble of all of its rivals, which helped it secure victory at the Screen Actors Guild Awards time and time again. In 2013, Maggie Smith became the first and only solo cast member to secure a victory for the PBS series.

If “The Crown” does prevail at the SAG Awards, that would mean it took down the category’s overwhelming front-runner, “Succession.” The HBO family drama is also up for its final season, but it has a leg up on the competition considering it has recently steam-rolled through the Emmys, Golden Globes and Critics Choice Awards. Don’t forget that “Succession” also won the guild’s drama cast category the only other time it was nominated (2021).
