SAG Awards 2016: Uzo Aduba took her high school prom date to the ceremony

Uzo Aduba took her high school prom date to the SAG Awards

Uzo Aduba had a pretty good night at the SAG Awards. Not only did she pick up two trophies, one as part of the cast of Orange is the New Black and one for her individual role as Suzanne “Crazy Eyes” Warren, but she attended with one of her closest friends — and her high school prom date.

Aduba shared two photos of the pair on Instagram, one from Saturday’s awards ceremony and one throwback from prom night. “He asked me to the prom, I said yes,” she wrote. “I asked him to the SAGs, he said yes.”

Aduba has won two years in a row at the SAG Awards, and she previously won both for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Comedy Series and for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Comedy Series.

Backstage after this year’s win, Aduba theorized about why her OITNB character has become such a fan favorite.

“I know for myself what I love about her is her authenticity,” she said. “Her honesty. Her willingness, despite the challenge, that is to love and just even existing authentically as herself. She still risks it, despite the challenge that it takes to be that much herself. I love that about her. She’s entirely purely herself, and that’s what I like about her.”
